I take pride in my work. I put oodles of effort into every single on of my manuscripts. The settings are heavily researched, the plot is thoroughly planned, the characters become a life of their own. I don’t post something online until I’ve looked it over carefully. Yes, sometimes there are a few spelling mistakes or a word missing, but that’s not due to lack of trying.
I don’t like to think of myself as an overly sensitive person, but there are certain things that do get to me. Bad reviews are one of those things. I get it. People are free to think and say whatever they want about my stories. I know that’s a risk I make whenever I post a new chapter online. That’s not what bugs me.
If someone wants to write a review about one of my stories, great. Good or bad, I’m happy my works are actually getting noticed. But there’s a proper way to go about writing a bad review.
That’s what a bad review is supposed to entail (at least on FictionPress). The review system is out there so writers can give other writers advice to help improve one’s writing. Not so they can call it unbearable to read and impossible for them to stomach any more. That’s just wrong.
I understand if it’s your job as a critic to comment (sometimes harshly) on pieces of literature that get published. But those same sorts of rules don’t apply to this sort of online publishing. I have just as much right as anyone else to publish whatever I choose.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to stop writing because of one stupid person’s childish review. If anything, this is just going to make me work harder. And in turn I will become a better writer.
I guess the point I’m trying to make here is that some people out there are mean. They are going to take any chance they get to tear you down and make you stop loving doing what you’re doing. Don’t listen to them. Continue to write as you choose. Other people out there will love it.
